“Pony who had (what I believe) is a seizure…”
Hi there,
I volunteer at a farm and we have a pony who had (what I believe) is a seizure yesterday. Actually 8 of them in an 80-minute period. I have tried to look up information about seizures in horses on the Internet, but couldn’t find a checklist to go for the symptoms. What I really need is a side-by-side comparison of Colic and Seizures, so that I can figure out what is going on with my girl! Thanks for the help!
Dr. Jack Sales’ Answer:
Hi Shannon,
Comparing colic to seizures, first of all, seizures are much less common than colic symptoms, but they do sometimes occur. Let me give you some common colic symptoms. Mild symptoms include looking at the belly, biting at the belly or flanks, stretching or other postural abnormalities, lying down for extended periods with occasional rolling. More severe symptoms include, throwing themselves on the ground, excessive sweating, laying down and rolling uncontrollably, attempting to lie down while you are trying to walk them. A seizure, on the other hand, will have a horse falling to the ground and shaking uncontrollably while seeming to be in a state of unconsciousness or being unaware of their surroundings, eyes turning back into their heads. They may also show a dazed appearance for a while after the seizure. Either of these types of symptoms would require a Vet call. I hope this helps and good luck.
