“was kicked in the lower hock”…
Hello:
I have a 10 year old TB who was kicked in the lower hock in Aug. He was sound a few days later for about 3 weeks and then became very lame. I took him for a flouroscope and he has a hairline fracture in his lower hock. He also has a bone spur. He has been on stall rest since September. What do you think the chances are for recovery? I have been told that the bone will fuse and he should be fine. His intended use is eventing. Thanks
Dr. Jack Sales’ Answer:
Hi Laura,
The lower hock area will usually heal pretty well from hairline cracks and usually there is minimal or no problem after the healing occurs. Even if the lower joints fuse, the horse will remain sound. I hope this helps and good luck.
