“she developed a very large hematoma on her haunch. “…
Recently my horse either got kicked or fell down and she developed a very large hematoma on her haunch. The vet needed to drain it and it has been draining lightly for a week. He did not want me to put any medication on it and prescribed no antibiotics. He mentioned that it was good that it was cold outside now. I am to keep the leg clean, lift the hole and help it to drain. It just now started to stink and I have a call into him asking if she needs to be on antibiotics and am waiting for him to call me back. So should I be putting any medicine on the wound and should she be getting antibiotics?
Dr. Jack Sales’ Answer:
Hi Desiree,
A veterinarian will usually hope that a hematoma will drain and heal without antibiotics, but sometimes they get infected before they actually resolve. It sounds as if this open draining wound has become infected, and your Vet will probably go ahead and prescribe antibiotics and/or an antibacterial flush for the open wound. (betadine solution). I hope this helps and good luck.
